Year 9 Garin student Matthew Butchart competed in the Under 17 100cc Yamaha Class at the recent South Island Kart Champs. Matthew has only been involved in the sport for two years and is thrilled with his result.
The event involved two time trial qualifying races where he recorded the second fastest time. Drivers then competed in the pre-final race where he started second on the grid. He was placed second in this race and so started second in the final.
Early on he slipped back to third but came back to take second and closed the gap on first place.
Matthew is very excited with the result, especially considering the winning driver is older and won two out of three big meetings in the North Island over the past year.
Another Garin College student, Andrew Goodman, was also involved, vying for seventh in the final before crashing out.
