The theme of this year is beginnings. As students learn within topic areas they will draw upon language, symbols and texts that are at the heart of the Christian faith. They will use creative and critical thinking in order to better understand source material and to advance their own learning. Students will also give witness to Christian values. This will take place within the classroom and through the Journey Programme.

Students are required to have a 1B5 exercise book as a writing journal for class activities.  

This is a thematic course divided over the four terms during which students will develop confidence in all areas of the English language. They will work on a variety of projects, both individually and in groups, and collaborate on tasks which will develop literacy skills of reading, writing and communication.

They will then be able to make informed decisions about the applications and implications of science as these relate to their own lives and cultures and to the sustainability of the environment.

An IJ5 exercise book will be required.  Students will become more familiar with calculating and estimating, using appropriate mental and written calculation methods in flexible ways. They will start to learn algebraic generalisation and representing patterns and relationships found in numbers, shapes and measures. They will learn valuable thinking skills. In year 10 students will require a graphics calculator. Casio 9750 is on the list of acceptable calculators for NZQA and is our recommendation.

The aim of Social Studies is to engender wonder, enthusiasm and love of learning. While experiencing new ideas and posing controversial questions, students are encouraged to achieve their personal level of excellence. Year Nine looks into New Zealand's Culture and the events that have played a part in forming who we are today. They study the gap between the rich and the poor and how we share out the world's limited resources. Year Nine learns about digital citizenship and keeping themselves safe.Year Nine investigates the contributing factors behind the patterns of crime and looks at various aspects of individual and collective rights in NZ and internationally.

Physical Education & Health

Students will be involved in a wide range of physical activities to cover the four strands and key competencies of the Health and Physical Education curriculum. The topics are structured to be progressive and inclusive, whilst providing a safe learning environment within a practical context. This subject uses physical activities to explore motor skills as well as the key competencies of relating to others, managing self, participating and contributing. Students will also investigate current health topics.

Students will use the design process to solve real life problems ranging from healthier takeaway food  to designing taonga that reflect their cultural heritage. Technology is intervention by design and adaptation and innovation are at the heart of technological practice. Students will learn practical skills in the areas of Digital; Fashion and Design; Food and Materials.They produce quality outcomes that result from thinking and practices that are informed, critical and creative. Technology is never static. It is influenced by and in turn impacts on the cultural,ethical, environmental, political, and economic conditions of the day.
