… from the newsletter notes of Head Teacher John Boyce
Chaplaincy is part of our Pastoral programme. There are staff in the school who are responsible for supporting the growth of the spirit in each our students. We do this in all sorts of ways – through our annual camps, through spiritual experiences on our retreats, through experience of liturgy and the sacraments, through the development of a caring Christian culture in the school where the spiritual dimension of each student is recognised and valued.
Although many students and staff might find it difficult to talk about the part of Garin ethos that values the inner spirit of each person in our community, they can easily talk about the effects. They use words like caring, calm, quiet, supportive, friendly. They tell us that they like the way older and younger students mix and help each other. Many of them volunteer to give up time to help others here and in the community.
All of our staff are involved in this part of our programme, but one takes special responsibility: former Head of Religious Education Suellen Boyce works to support individual students on their journey in her chaplaincy role. As well,.local priests support us in the liturgical life of the school.
