The end of year prize giving ceremony is always a special time for us and 2011 was a great one for our international students. We would like to acknowledge the success of the following students who received prizes.

Tina from Korea – Distinction in Drama, Recognition: Rangimarie, Mitchell Family Cup for Most Outstanding Performance in the Arts, McGurk Cup for best Acting Performance of the Year Yr 11-13, The Tina Yun Cup in recognition of high achievement by an international student.

Start of a new year 2012

We are all excited about welcoming our new and returning students in 2012. It is such a great time of the year when everyone is positive, rested and ready to start a new year. Everyone is waiting for the NCEA results and I am confident that all the students who worked hard during the year will be happy with their results. Watch this space for more updates.

Wow. We are really proud of the exam results! Our international students really showed that if you put in the work you can achieve excellent results. One of our international students is amongst the top achieving students for NCEA Level 3. This is an amazing achievement as she is studying in her second language and still manages to achieve as well as our best New Zealand students.

Garin College students achieved above the national average at all levels.

Garin NCEA Level 2 87% National Average 76%

Garin NCEA Level 3 86% National Average 69%

2012 Subject Selection

I have met with all current international students to discuss their 2012 subject selection and their long term goals. This is a very valuable time as it gives me the opportunity to make sure they are choosing subjects which will give them the best university choices. I am happy to say that our students are very motivated and some have very high goals set. I look forward to being part of the effort to help them get there.

Homestay Evening

In Term 3 2011, Science teacher Mr Shead spoke with Homestay families and students about how to study at home and prepare for exams. The school has a learning portal called “Moodle” and this was explained and displayed to everyone. It was a very useful and successful Homestay evening.
