Garin College is a small friendly school where each student is important. We have a small, specialised international student programme with a maximum of 25 students. Our students come from a range of countries and they are expected to speak English at all times at school.
We try to have a mixture of nationalities so we do not allow large numbers of students from the same country or region to enrol with us at the same time. We aim to have no more than 6 students from the same place.
All students must have a minimum of lower intermediate English if they want to join us in the senior school from Year 11 upwards. Students wanting to join us in Year 9 or Year 10 can have elementary English because they have time to improve before starting the national NCEA exams in Year 11. We expect full integration with the local New Zealand “Kiwi” students. This is the only requirement. You will have a New Zealand buddy to help you.
We work with each student to help them gain the qualifications they need. We expect everybody to become fluent in speaking, reading and writing English. We expect every student to use our school as a step to gain further qualifications when they leave school.
We help our students to plan their education pathway on into university and assist with university applications. Our international director meets with each student each year to select their subjects and discuss their future goals and dreams. This way we can help our students to focus on their future and choose the subjects they will need to progress on to future study.
We want the parents of our international students to be involved in the education of their young people, so we will send regular reports on their progress, as well as a weekly school newsletter.
