Mahi Toi concert another highlight

The First XV haka was a highlight

Isaac Thomas in his Charlie Brown monologue

RAW again displayed students' technological creativity

The Year 13 girls explored the Garin ethos

Holly Tippler and Hamish McIntosh were a highlight with a stunning modern dance

Jack Sanders and Tina Yun in a piece of modern theatre

Georgia Nott and Abbey Phillips from Peasants of Eden

As usual, term 2 finished with a sensational display of the artistic talent of young people. The earlier two day festival had shown students at their very best, and the concert allowed parents to see a selection of the best items – but there were plenty more that could not be fitted in.

Top Sporting results from July

Tom Ashley and Tom Nicholson

Term 2 finished with the highlight of the Garin Arts year; Te Wairua o nga Mahi Toi, but already the College’s top sports people were hard at work making July our top sporting month. Tom Nicholson and Tom Ashley missed Mahi Toi because they were in Australia in the New Zealand cycling team – both picking up top 20 international placings.

Our karting team were straight into Garin’s first karting nationals – and Matt Butchart, Taylor Forbes, Georgia Goodman and Andrew Goodman did very well with Matt’s two top six placings being the highlight.

Our junior netball team pushed through to fourth in the South Island tournament in Christchurch during the holidays.

Senior A Netballers after convincing win over visiting English team

Garin Senior A netballers beat Royal Grammar School Worcester 27-15

Our Under 15 rugby team beat top placed Waimea to set themselves up for finals rugby in few weeks.

Jonathan Page took a second, a third and a fourth at South Island swimming.

First five Sam Ellis scored twice in the opening few minutes to set up a good win 21-10

And at the end of the first week of the term we hosted two English schools for our traditional international fixture – recording three netball wins and our first XV also recorded a spirited and hard-fought win.

Garin: the school for academic excellence

Last year we were very pleased with our teachers and students for really good results-placing us at the very top of academic achievement in the top-of-the-south. One of the things we were not so happy with was the fact that although the pass-rates were high, we did not have enough students gaining Merit and Excellence passes. You can see from this 2009 table that we remain ahead of the rest of the country in our students who gained National Certificates endorsed with Merit and Excellence in all areas except last year’s year 13 Excellence awards. In 2007 we awarded Colours to 18 year 12 and 13 students, last year it was just 15-and this year we will be awarding Colours-students who gained their entire NCEA with Merit and Excellence grades-to 31 of our 139 year 12 and 13 students! That’s 23% of our students!

 This year we are consciously teaching our junior students to think in our HOTT classes-and training our seniors to make effective use of their brainpower in study periods. So we expect to keep improving every year.

Well done to our students who did the work-our teachers who provided the focus and support-and to our families who encouraged, cajoled and demanded that students reach for their potential.

Garin: the Triathlon school

triathlon-group-small-picCongratulations to the triathlon team who performed superbly at the recent regional event at Rabbit Island on Monday.  Of the six race categories for individual competitors, Garin athletes won three-(Joel MacManus-U16, Liam Mintrom-U14 and Phoebe Harris-U14), and placed second in two-(Maria Schryvers-U16 and Cameron Eggers-U19).

On top of this, the seniors boys’ team of Jonathan Page, Tom Ashley and Marc Knalmann-Jary predictably thrashed the other teams with a winning margin of 12 minutes! Predictably Garin also won the trophy for  overall best school. The secret to the success was the hard work put in by the athletes and coaches starting last October.

Josh Lis, Maryann Cant, Matt and Patrick Hassan also all had strong races.

Garin: First in the world stock market!

 Congratulations to three of our Stock Market teams who, we have just learned, achieved stunning results.

stockmarket-team-small1During the 2009 school year, the Year 9 and Year 10 gifted and talented students competed in the International Stock Market Game and WON! The game has been in existence since 1977 and is used by thousands of schools worldwide as an educational tool. Students who participate in the game learn more than investing, they learn how to research and evaluate stock, decision making, cooperation and communication.

Garin College, the only team in New Zealand competing, had six teams in last year’s game in the International Division of 83 total teams. The Year 9 team consisting of Sjaan Hungerford, Abbie Phillips, Veronica Mitchell and Louie Armstrong placed first in the Junior High division, while Hamish McIntosh, Matt Butchart, Erin Wilks and Lauren Faulkner placed third in the same division. Our Year 10 team consisting of Nick Allison and Callum Turner placed first in the High School division.

In order to win, students had to invest a hypothetical $100,000 in the US market and create a diversified portfolio through a live trading simulation. Our students outwitted the other teams by choosing and sticking with companies that they researched. The next game starts on March 22 and we hope to do even better!

Opening Mass and Investiture 2010

Our Opening Mass is always the first gathering for the year ofthe school and the Garin community as we gather to ask fro a good year and to appoint and bless our school leavers.school-leaders-small

Father Maurice Carmody was joined by Fr Raymond Soriano to lead our celebration. We were also joined by our local primary school principals, Mike Burton from St Joseph’s and Jo McKay from St Paul’s and their Year 8 Christian Leaders, along with some of our loyal supporters Win Strawbridge, Lesley and John Mallon, members of our Board and Hostel Trust and, of course, parents from our school community.

The Mass focused on our school motto: Faith and Wisdom. We heard that wisdom is “as good as receiving an inheritance and will give you as much security as money can. Wisdom keeps you safe”. And as for Faith: in one of the Bible’s few reference to success John told us: “If you have reverence for God, you will be successful anyway”.

At the end of Mass our student leaders for this year were named and blessed: Rianna Farr and Jared van de Geest, who are Captains of Christian Service and Head Students this term, handed out badges to Sarah Quinney and Claudio Cannata who are our Captains of Learning, Oscar Damerham and Alice Gray who are our Arts leaders, and Sam Ellis and Rebekah Kingsbury who are our Sports Captains.

Our House Captains are Brodie Bell (Aubert) and his deputies are Charlotte Watkins (Christian Service), Emily Chapple    (Learning), Caleb Nott (Arts), and Lydia Wadsworth (Sports deputy);

Lucy van Zoelen (Barbier) with deputies Mark Coghlan, Marc Knalmann-Jary, Alex Menzies, and Marcus Parker;

Tom Ashley (McAuley) and deputies Amy Moffat, Zane Barker, Tony Sardella and Declan Cahill;

Rebecca Sims (MacKillop) and her deputies Gemma Doorman, Rosa Kim, Natalie Hardiman and Craig Vaile.

Our Head Librarian is Rosa Kim and her deputies are Matthew Ruffell and Tomica Saunders.  Craig Vaile and Lauren Murphy are the Heads of Garin Hostel.

Garin: the girls’ volleyball school

Over the last three weeks the Year 10 Volleyball girls have given people something to talk about. Playing in the A Grade Junior Volleyball competition the team has beaten Nayland A, Nelson Girls A and Waimea 10A.

The team is capably coached by Year 12 students Lulu Shanaher and Lydia Wadsworth. “They are a dedicated team who have lots of spirit and potential” commented Lulu. “It’s great to see Garin achieving such brilliant results against bigger schools.”

The team consists of Sjaan Hungerford (captain), Amber Roozendaal, Phoebe Harris, Ashley Booth, Talia Merrin, Keeli Ferris and Rosie Hopkins.  The girls have shown a strong commitment to their play, with great work in the backcourt picking up free balls and a consistent standard of serving. The front court are quick on their feet and counter attacking through great blocks.  Expect to see more from the Garin team as they compete in the up-coming regional tournament.

Garin Student receives top award

Gabes Callaghan has won New Zealand’s highest award for hearing-impaired children who are receiving their education in mainstream schools rather than special schools. Deaf and hearing-impaired children who are able to keep up with their hearing peers are, according to research in their field, like gifted hearing children. The Makere Mason Memorial Trophy recognises New Zealand’s highest achievement of a deaf student in a mainstream school, and this year it was awarded to Gabes.gabes-receiving-award

The citation for the award and medal reads: For 2009, Year 11 student, Gabriel Callaghan from Garin College, Nelson receives the NZFDC Makere Mason Memorial Trophy for Academic Excellence – and he is seen here receiving it from Garin’s ORRS teacher Mary McEntyre at last week’s annual Awards.
