Great South Island kart racing result

butchartYear 9 Garin student Matthew Butchart competed in the Under 17 100cc Yamaha Class at the recent South Island Kart Champs. Matthew has only been involved in the sport for two years and is thrilled with his result.

The event involved two time trial qualifying races where he recorded the second fastest time. Drivers then competed in the pre-final race where he started second on the grid. He was placed second in this race and so started second in the final.

Early on he slipped back to third but came back to take second and closed the gap on first place.

Matthew is very excited with the result, especially considering the winning driver is older and won two out of three big meetings in the North Island over the past year.

Another Garin College student, Andrew Goodman, was also involved, vying for seventh in the final before crashing out.

Top Technology school in Top of the South

Congratulations to the five Garin technology students who represented Garin in this year’s Science and Technology Fair.

pittarYear 12 student Nick Pittar did particularly well winning the top Technology prize – and to coming second overall in the competition. His prizes amounted to $750. Nick’s project was a historical project of the Brook Sanctuary. He worked very hard throughout the year to develop a quality product which reflects his love for history, and Garin’s long-term commitment to the success of the Brook Sanctury.

Not far behind Nick were Isaac Thomas, David Swanson, Craig Lautenslager and Hamish Griffith. Every one of the  Garin entrants received prizes, and followed up last year’s first placing with the top three places for Technology this year.

Excellent Technology – and a real credit to the students and their teachers! Well done.

Superb Cycling results

bike2Garin College cyclists rode superbly at the South Island secondary schools two day tour held during the national tournament week. Riders completed a 3km time trial, a Criterium where points were gained on multiple sprint laps, a 1km hill time trial and a scratch race.

Our students achieved superb results.

Thomas Ashley competing in the Under 20 grade was first in the Criterium and second overall. Tom Nicholson in the Under 17 won the overall yellow jersey and was the green jersey sprint ace winner as well as winning the Criterium.bike11

Under 15 Joel MacManus won the King of the Mountain polka dot jersey, was first in the hilltop time trial, and second overall.

Maria Schryvers in the Under 17 Girls first in hilltop time trial, led after three stages, but lost in the scratch race ending in fourth position. This was her second ever race!
An amazing tour: big thanks from the team to coach Henry Kersten.

National success for two students

romanCongratulations to year 13 students Clenda Wockner and Roman Birch who were this week informed that they had won two different national competitions in the arts arena.

Clenda is a photographer in the top-of-the-south’s Wild Tomato magazine and won the national Stage Challenge award for best photographer of costume – and Roman is one of our gifted singers and musicians, and he won the award for best original lyrics in the national Play it Strange songwriting competition.clenda

Both have had long experience in music and photography, and both have gained considerable local recognision for their talents, but Garin College is very proud they have received national recognition – and congratulates them and their families.

School proud of excellent NCEA results

Staff and students were very pleased with last year’s NCEA results, and we are doubly pleased to see that Garin College is the top academic school in our region. Congratulations and thanks to students, staff and families for your hard work last year making that happen. And great to see our boys and our girls both doing well compared to schools that specialise in single sex education. Hostel staff are also very pleased to maintain their high standards with pass-rates of 92% for level 1, and 100% for levels 2 and 3.

Find out about enrolling at Garin

In term 3, year 8 students and their families can find out how to enrol at Garin College for 2010.

Many families make an appointment to sit down with Head Teacher John Boyce to discuss the school. Many families without a Catholic connection need to know how to enrol a child as one of the school’s 67 “non-preference” students. Mr Boyce is also happy to meet families and show them the school in action.

Garin has two “Open Day” events.

The first is an information evening where teachers and current students talk about the school and answer questions. That is held in the school library 7-8.30pm on Thursday 30 July.

The second event is an afternoon for students and families to see the school in action, beginning at noon on Wednesday 5 August. This starts with a barbecue lunch and some information about the school – and then Garin students take groups on tours around classrooms so families can get a real taste of Garin’s style of education.

Go to the site’s enrolment page.

Mahi Toi concert

aaaaaaaaaa-mt-evening-053In its eighth year, the Mahi Toi gives students two days of performance and viewing a wide range of creative activities.

A week of musical successes

nick1It has been a week of success and recognision for three of our musicians.

Year 12 violinist Nick Pittar, has just been named as a member of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Symphony Orchestra.

He also won first place in the Nelson School of Music Scholarships in the Phyllis Fell open category playing Mozart concerto in D No. 4 1st movement.

Nick is seen here playing as part of Garin’s Sheilagh Winn Shakespearean production which won the top-of-the-south competition and gained national recognision for their musical accompaniment.

Year 10 pianist Holly Tippler won the Under 14 piano scholarship playing a piece by Bartok and one by Grenados in the same Nelson School of Music competition.

And to finish the week, Year 11 guitarist Clark Hinton was awarded best musician at the finals of Nelson Rock Quest.

Excellent report on Garin’s Special Character

At the end of term 1, current Principal Mary Cook and former Principal Collene Roche spent three days in the school looking at the Catholic nature of Garin, and the quality of our RE programme. We take being a Catholic school very seriously – and our staff and Board were proud of what they found here.

So it was good to read things like …

  • There is no doubt that gospel values are a key to the operation of the school
  • The relationships in the school are most positive and visitors are treated with respect
  • The school has worked successfully to enhance academic achievement
  • The faith-based vision of the school is clear
  • The Catholic culture is strong with prayer celebrated in many formats.
  • Pastoral care is clearly evident and students can be confident that they are part of a safe environment which supports their learning and well being.
  • Restorative Justice is the key to the way in which behaviour management with student issues is carried out.
  • Students report that they feel safe at school. The dignity of all persons in the community is highly respected and this is borne out through support and structures.

Those observations are the results of eight years of planning and hard work by staff, parents, Boards and students. In the first few years when staff, students, parents and Boards were coming from different experiences and had different expectations, everyone had to work very hard to develop a shared vision for our school – and then to build the school we wanted Garin to become.

We are still not the school we hope to become. There is still plenty to do – but this report shows that we have come a long way and can feel justifiably proud of what we have managed to achieve in our first few years. Congratulations and a big thank you to all of our supporters over the years for your contribution and support in building our school.

Read the full report.
