Our Hostel

The Hostel community

The College and Hostel were founded to serve the Catholic community in the “top of the South”-the region north of a line between Westport and Kaikoura in the South Island of New Zealand.

The students in the hostel live in houses where 26 students can live with a live-in supervisor. Each student has a private space to sleep and live, but the Garin hostels are communities of caring and supportive “families.”

Why boarders do better

Garin boarders have an wonderful reputation for success in sports, arts and learning.

In 2008 92% of boarders studying NCEA level 1 passed. And the pass-rate for level 2 and 3 was 100%! Every year 12-13 boarder passed.

Why do boarders do better?

  • Regular study, supervised by adults who can support the students’ learning
  • Professional pastoral care
  • Excellent management and supervision by trained adult supervisors
  • Excellent new facilities

What we do for our boarders…

  • We insist on regular home study
  • If you have problems, our pastoral and management staff will help solve them
  • We will insist that you continue to grow as a person, and educationally
  • We will take you to after school activities, and make sure you are organised to fit in all the things you need to do

…and what they do for the community

  • Our boarders are an important part of the Richmond parish
  • Our boarders are involved in the life of the Richmond community in their sport, culture and Christian service

Every boarder has a responsibility to look after the people in the hostel family
