During Tournament week the 1st XI Mixed Hockey Team went to Blenheim to compete in the South Island Secondary School’s Mixed Tournament. We left Nelson full of excitement and energy and couldn’t wait to play our first game against Hamilton Christian School (HCS) the following day. We were absolutely fired up when we heard the starting whistle and managed to keep the score at 1-1 at half time. Unfortunately, HCS got two penalty corners in the last quarter upon which they scored, ending the game in 3-1. So it was time for Mr Kersten’s bun and banana special along with his magic “whey protein” drink. As we drove back to the motel spirits remained high and we were now focused on the next game later in the day against Mount Aspiring. Despite playing a great game of hockey and Rilee McCrae scoring two goals we went down 3-2. On Tuesday, we played against Rodney College. We quickly put two in the back of the net with Julia Kersten and Antony Lam scoring two blinders. However, despite Garin dominating the play, Rodney came back with 2 goals ending the game in a draw, 2-2. We had the bun and banana special to look forward to after the game. The following day we took on Naenae College. Alisha Lewis put us on top first with a penalty stroke in the first quarter. This got us all very fired up, particularly Billy Powick who then got a few breakaways and managed to score 2 goals shortly after. We ended up winning that game 3-0 which we were all very happy with. To top that off, Mr Stock and Mr Kersten took us to Picton for the evening where we went out and had burgers and chips for dinner. What a great day! Then there was Thursday. The day of the infamous ‘Kersten quiz’. Something everyone was looking forward too. But first we played Naenae College again, and again coming out with a 2-0 win during 8 second shootouts. We had our buns and bananas and went back to the cabins to shower and get ready for the quiz. Aside from the Hockey this ended up being a highlight of the tournament for many and with good reason. We had an absolute blast! On Friday we got up early, packed our stuff and went down to the turf one last time to play against Wakatipu. Seeing as this was our last game for some of us we gave it our absolute all, leaving it all on the field, and it paid off. We played an absolutely awesome game of hockey and came out with a good win over Wakatipu 4-2. Sure enough, before we even got off the turf, we were already being handed bun’s and bananas by Mr Kersten. What a way to wrap an absolutely amazing week of tournament! Overall for the Tournament we placed 5th. Coach: Mr Stock and Manager: Mr Kersten
