Marine Safety Expo

Nov 3, 2022

The Nelson Harbour Master’s office is running the annual ‘Marine Safety Expo’ at the Nelson Marina this coming weekend.  Saturday and Sunday 10am – 2pm.

Nelson Bays Police Search & Rescue have been involved in supporting this initiate given the obvious prevention benefits for water users in our area.

Our focus is promoting life jackets and PLB use on small vessels, alongside general water safety around the Tasman Bay environ.

Police Launch Lady Elizabeth from The Wellington Maritime Unit will be attending the event, and will be available to go on board between 10-2 both days.  This is an excellent opportunity to come and have a good look on board the vessel and speak with the crew.  Last year some members of the National Dive Squad also came along.  This is an impressive vessel and well worth a look – kids will love it!

The new Nelson Coastguard Rescue Vessel, ‘Hohapata’ will also be available for a look over.  This is an impressive rescue asset for our local area, with a highly committed team of local volunteers.

There will be a number of other vessels attending (including the big orange life boat from down by the Styx restaurant!) and numerous displays, spot prizes and quite possibly small Lady Liz foldup cardboard models for the kids (kinda like the little police car versions – please note these are not sea worthy incarnations)

The event is about 100m north from Ruby’s coffee caravan on Akersten Street, near the marina office.

All welcome.

Lady Elizabeth.  NZ Police.
