Jul 1, 2022

Tēnā koutou katoua ngā whānau,

What outstanding evidence of self directed creativity and talent we had on show in celebration of Mahi Toi this week. Congratulations to all our learners for the spirit in which you have entered Te Wairua O Ngā Mahi Toi (The Spirit of the Arts) this year, the Arts is alive and well at Garin!

The wairua we live and experience at Garin builds year to year on the shoulders of those that have travelled the journey before us. Our learners look up to and take inspiration from our student leaders, they are inspirational. Well done to all, you do not squander your talent as young people – you have your creative talent on display and bring this to the fore each time you put yourself forward in performance.

I thank our Arts Coordinator Head of Faculty Art, Sharlene Belcher; our Arts Faculty- Arts Coordinator, Sarah Pumphrey; Arts leaders, Jesse and Vianne; our teachers and staff for their energy and participation. You have motivated, supported and inspired all learners.

I congratulate our year 10 learners for their participation in the NCEA Year 10 Numeracy Pilot exam held this week at school, this is a first for year 10 Learners to be sitting an external NCEA assessment as a cohort. I am impressed with their diligence and focus on doing their best in preparation and exam. I particularly thank you for our HOF Rachel Cookson for her leadership of the NCEA Numeracy Pilot. Next week we have our Y11 RE learners undertake their NCEA RE assessment for the Religious Education NCEA Pilot assessments. I wish all learners every success.

I remind you all that enrolments for 2023 are now open. In the first week of term three we have our Parent Information Evening in our school library, Wednesday evening 27 July and our Open Day in week two on Wednesday 3  August. If you have family or friends considering secondary schooling for their children, please encourage them to contact our school office for enquiry and an application pack.

The Triannual Board Elections are being held in September this year. I encourage parents to consider nomination and standing for election to the Garin Board; there are 5 Parent representative positions on the Board. Should you like to discuss or learn more about school board election visit www.schoolboardelections.org.nz or if you wish to learn more about the Garin College Board you may contact the school office or the Board Presiding Member, Mr Chris Ward.

We continue to  work at slowing the spread of the Covid virus at school; hygiene, wearing face masks on school transport and indoor settings is essential. Your support and encouragement of your student in maintaining these health and safety measures is appreciated, thank you.

Matariki shines bright in our skies.

Mā te Atua koe e tiaki – May God be with you

Ngā manaakitanga,

John Maguire
