Debating Team

Mar 9, 2019

On Saturday 23rd February five Garin teams and a Nayland/Garin composite team attended the KahurangiMarlborough Regional Debating Tournament at Nelson College for Girls. It was their first time debating for many of the students and although some were nervous we soon got into the swing of things and it became more enjoyable as the day went on.
We learnt a lot (quickly) about how to debate and our skills improved as the day went on. The senior final between Garin (Theo Gabites, Jade , Megan Richie), and Nayland was exciting and very close, with Garin negating ―This house would prefer a world where nobody is able to lie”. Garin narrowly missed the win. The Garin/ Nayland composite team that included Jesse Sherlock won their junior final debate over Nelson College, affirming ―This house regrets the rise of solely online relationships‖. Antony Lam gained the award for the speaker with the best style and Jade Alborn and Megan Ritchie received highly commended certificates for their outstanding performance. Theo Gabites was selected for the Kahurangi/Marlborough Regional Debating Team, for the second year running, to compete against the other regions in the National Competition later this year. It was a long day and we would like to thank everyone who came to support us on the day.
