APPLIES TO ALL SCHOOLS IN TASMAN AREA
Starting Term 3, schools that are on local roads in the Tasman district will have a 30 km/h limit during pick-up and drop-off times. This limit will only apply on the roads immediately outside the school gates or access points for a 90 minute period at the start and the end of the school day. New signs will clearly show when the variable speed limit applies. These signs will be static signs (example alongside) with the exception of Appleby School which will have electronic variable signs. Signage will be installed over the next month.
This change aligns with national regulations requiring all councils to introduce safe school speed zones by 1 July, 2026. It also supports our goal of safer streets near schools.
From 28 July 2025, this variable limit will apply to all schools except for:
- Schools that are on State Highways: NZTA will be beginning their consultation on variable limits around schools in Term 1, 2026.
- Wakefield School: Variable 30 km/h on Treeton Place; permanent 30 km/h on Edward Street.
- Tasman Christian School: Speed reduced from 80 km/h to 60 km/h (no variable limit).
Here is a document that shows the variable speed changes. It also shows the speed reductions which are occurring in July around the following schools.
- Central Takaka School
- Collingwood School
- Hope School
- Ngatimoti School
- Tasman School
- Tasman Bay Christian School
- Upper Moutere School
- Wakefield School.
In addition to these changes, we are currently consulting on other reductions in Tasman: https://shape.tasman.govt.nz/speed-phase-two: Consultation closes on the 21 July.
